You can get them at National Azabu for 20-50,000 yen plus a "disposal fee" payable up front. We opted for the real but very "Charlie Brown" looking Christmas tree from Ikea for 1,990 yen.

New reader starting today! And very nice post, this. I had never even given any thought to trying to get a real tree, just assumed that was right out. But now we might have to make a family outing of it!

"Can Rikuto shred paper yet?"

No, but he can pull tissues apart and put them in his mouth! ;-)

@PK: That's a great tip! I'll mention it in a followup post.

@Nick Ramsey: Yes, it will be Noah's first Christmas! My mom sent us a little "Baby's First Christmas" outfit with candy canes on it. It's too bad the little guy doesn't have enough manual dexterity to open his own presents :) Can Rikuto shred paper yet?

@toratora: That's hilarious! I don't think that would fly where I am. My area is rural, but the forested area is a bit away from my house. A hundred people or so would catch me in the act.

@Natalie: Thanks for the tip! I'll add that to the follow up post too. A free Christmas tree!

@Rob: I figured Costco would have something - they seem to have everything else. I don't have one near me though so I couldn't check to make sure. Thanks for the tip.

@NPC: 十人十色 :). Real trees are a big hassle, and much more expensive in the long run - but it's what my family has done since before I was born. Christmas just isn't the same without one. It smells really nice too.

I prefer fake trees. I can't imagine even going back to a real tree, the hassle isn't worth it.
